![]() ![]() The bigger numbers on the water have also attracted new sailors and youth to take up Laser sailing making it now the biggest class in Darwin. Locals say it has increased from 6 to 30 boats in the last 2 years, and they are not all Masters. As a result of a major Laser event in the north of Australia the local fleet has exploded as word of the regatta has inspired many to get back on the water. Gary Martin, local laser legend, was the brainchild being the event being held in Darwin and the results have been beyond successful. The Darwin Sailing Club, their staff & volunteers have done an amazing job with the regatta going very smoothly. There was also the competitors OLCA meeting where there were some great ideas tabled and all age categories were represented and part of the discussions. These conversations may have also inspired some people to get organised for the World Laser Masters in Adelaide in 2024. It has created a fantastic way to chat about the days racing, get to know the other sailors whilst watching the famous Darwin sunsets. Leading the pack in the Laser Standard division is Chris Rodowicz with a 7-point lead after the first 6 races. Racing has been in the afternoons leaving the mornings to relax although this has come at a cost with shifty conditions on the racecourse leading to some mixed results. The weather and conditions couldn’t be more glorious. The water is a bright aqua colour, weather is warm as many sailors hit the water in shorts. Racing has been taking place on the fabulous waters of Fannie Bay. Competitors have travelled from near and far with some driving their boats north whilst others decided charter boats were a better option. The Oceanic Laser Masters is being hosted by Darwin Sailing Club with 37 competitors from Australia & New Zealand competing in the week-long event. What a great regatta so far!
